Sculptural Flood Markers
Outside Assembly was commissioned by Logan City Council to extend the installation and narrative of the Tully Memorial Park Flood Markers.
The brief was to develop three additional markers with a new visual form and lighting effect that both compliments and contrasts the existing recycled timber markers.
This contrast in materials and aesthetic was done intentionally to signify a new era, and reinforce the message of climate change and natural disasters that are now occurring more frequently in the region.
The new Flood Marker design was inspired by a candle flame as a symbol of ongoing hope and persistence, both in remembrance and continuation in the face of adversity.
The silhouetted shapes convey the outer form whilst capturing the essence of the internal candle flame that provides an open and transparent internal beam of light as the focus.
The markers have been designed to be easily retrofitted in-situ immediately following the flood event with the installation of an illuminated 'flood year' panel and 'flood level' marker.
This creates a lasting memorial and visual reference of the water level at its peak height, which can be experienced either in a passing vehicle or up close and personal in the ever popular Tully Memorial Park.
Outside Assembly, together with the project team, has successfully created a collection of placemaking elements that will forever stand as a significant symbol in the community and landscape.
