The answer is yes, we can design sheds, but we often don’t. Fortunately, the term Industrial Design is becoming more common in Australia, but until recently it’s a profession that was more prominent in parts of Europe and the US.
A more recognisable term for our role is ‘Product Design’, but this doesn’t tell the true story of what Industrial Design is and how it got its name. Put simply, Industrial Designers are experts in industrial manufacturing processes. This is important as it is the founding principle of our design methodology. Process-led design is understanding a material and the different ways it can be manipulated to form a product.

So what does it all mean and what’s a simple answer to the question? Industrial Designers apply their knowledge and understanding of materials, finishes, and industrial manufacturing processes to design. We are highly skilled at working closely with manufacturing experts across any industry and applying their knowledge to determine the best possible solution.
The end goal is a design that focuses on how something is made as much as it considers who it is being made for. This philosophy can be applied to products, systems, landscapes, buildings, and sometimes even sheds.
